Eblen Energy

The Eblen-Kimmel Energy Project: has delivered hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil, natural gas, and assisted with electric bills to families in our community living with illnesses and disabilities. In partnership with Buncombe County Department of Social Services, Haywood Electric Membership Corporation, Biltmore Oil Company and cooperation with other oil distributors, Progress Energy and Public Service Gas Company, the Eblen-Kimmel Energy Project provides much needed assistance to families in need throughout the year. By providing heating oil and assistance with funding for gas and electric bills, purchasing space heaters, fans and air conditioning window units we can help ensure that our neighbors are not left out in the cold during the winter or suffer through the heat of summer.

Emergency Assistance Program: Developed to provide a vast array of assistance with non-medical needs. Realizing that living with the effects of illnesses and disabilities reaches further than the need for medication; the Emergency Assistance Program reaches out to provide help in other areas that families may need.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program: In partnership with the Buncombe County Department of Social Services, the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (formally FEMA) provides federal funds to assist families in need of rent, mortgage payments, utility assistance, and food.

Crisis Intervention Program: In partnership with the Buncombe County Department of Social Services, the Crisis Intervention Program provides heating and utility assistance to low- income families in Buncombe County. CIP is a federal program that assists with emergency heating and cooling, with a final notice. The maximum allotment for the CIP program is $300 per family, per year. The Crisis Intervention Program will also pay for deposits on electric or gas service and to assist in the purchase of heating oil, propane, wood, coal, and furnace repair.

Energy Neighbors: Like the CIP program, the Energy Neighbors program in Buncombe County is a partnership between the Buncombe County Department of Social Services and Eblen-Kimmel Energy. A unique program developed by Progress Energy provides utility assistance to low income families in North and South Carolina.  Since its origin in 1982, Energy Neighbors has provided over $13 million to more than 110,000 families needing heating assistance.   Employee and customer campaigns help raise funds for Energy Neighbors each fall, and the Progress Energy Foundation provides $250,000 in matching funds.

Locally the funds are distributed to the Buncombe County Department of Social Services and in turn to Eblen Energy to distribute to families in need. Energy Neighbors pays up to $300 per family, twice a year. This program is open to Progress Energy customers only. Funds can be used to provide assistance for all types of heating and cooling emergencies such as final notices on electric and gas bills, and to pay for oil, propane, wood, or coal.

Eblen-Kimmel Electric: Created in order to provide assistance to families living in western North Carolina in times of need with the ever-important task of keeping their homes lit and providing the energy to cook, heat, and to operate electrical appliances.

In partnership with Progress Energy and other energy providers in our area, Eblen-Kimmel Electric provides assistance to families struggling to pay their electric bills due to the high costs of living with illnesses and disabilities. Thanks to our on going relationships with energy providers, the generosity of donors, and the continuation of special events, Eblen Electric is able to assist thousands of families each year.

The Heating Outreach Initiative: No one should be left out in the cold, and it is with that philosophy in mind, the Heating Outreach Initiative was founded. The Heating Outreach Initiative provides heating oil and natural gas to families during the late fall and winter months. Thanks to the Biltmore Oil Company, Public Service Gas Company, and other local providers, we are able to offer heating aid to thousands of children, adults, and families in our community.

The Cooling Assistance Project: Growing out of the Eblen Heating Outreach Initiative, the Cooling Assistance Project strives to keep local families cool during the dog days of summer by providing fans and window-unit air-conditioners. As important as heat is in the winter, keeping cool and being able to draw an unrestricted during the heat of the summer months is every bit as vital to those that the Eblen-Kimmel Charitable Group serves. It is with thanks to the assistance of Ace Appliance, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, and other companies those struggling with the heat can keep cooler and breathe a bit easier.

Helping Each Member Cope: In partnership with Haywood Electric Membership Corporation, Helping Each Member Cope provides heating and utility assistance to members of Haywood EMC that find themselves in need of energy assistance.

Much like the Crisis Intervention Program, Helping Each Member Cope provides up to $300 annually to assist with deposits on electric or gas service and to assist in the purchase of heating oil, propane, wood, coal, and furnace repair.
